Each tastant sample consisted of 10 ml. Participants
were informed that each sample contained a taste
stimulant and that the tastants would be presented in
random order. Three predetermined random orders
were established by writing the 12 taste stimulant
names on pieces of paper and pulling them from a
hat. The process was repeated three times and the
random orders were rotated each day of data collection,
starting with random order 1 on data collection
day 1. The perceived modality of each sample was

recorded, and the perceived intensity was indicated
on a weighted visual analog scale. At least 30 ml of
distilled deionized water was used to rinse the mouth
between every sample.
