There are many reasons behind the success of
Canon. Notice, however, that just as Xerox did 20
years before it, Canon created for itself a
distinctive strategic position in the industry – a
position that was different from Xerox’s.
Whereas Xerox targeted big corporations as its
customers, Canon went after small companies
and individuals; while Xerox emphasised the
speed of its machines, Canon focused on quality
and price; and whereas Xerox used a direct sales
force to lease its machines, Canon used its
dealer network to sell its copiers. Rather than try
to beat Xerox at its own game, Canon triumphed
by creating its own unique strategic position
