The specific anammox activities (SAAs) of fresh granular and immobilized biomass before storage were ascertained as 302.7 57. 6 and 554.0 61.6 mmole-N g-VSS1 h1, respectively. The percentage of SAA recovered from the granular and immobilized anammox biomass after storage at 80 C was determined (Fig 1). Granular biomass showed 59% recovery of SAA after 45 days but no activity was observed after 90 and 150 days. Heylen et al. (2012) observed about 40% recovery of SAA of granular biomass of “Ca. Kuenenia stuttgartiensis” after storing at 80 C for about 200 days. However, it was also reported that preservation success was always strain dependent as entirely different SAA recoveries were observed for “Ca. Kuenenia” and “Ca. Scalindua” even under the same preservation condition (Heylen et al., 2012).
