Metabolic alkalosis is accompanied by the accumulation
of bicarbonates in the extracellular fluid, resulting in the
excessive loss of acids. This situation can occur when potassium
excretion is increased. Apart from alkalosis, other
conditions may increase the excretion of potassium, such
as vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal obstruction, peritonitis,
ascites, Cushing’s disease and kidney failure.
