(b) Effects of light/darkness. From the previous experiment (succession of infection
stages of C.granii), it became obvious that it was very time consuming to
distinguish between five different stages of infected diatoms. Because counting of
living samples limited the number of replicates, the experiment only distinguished
between non-infected and infected cells in the following experiment in order to
obtain enough data that could be treated statistically; succession of infected
diatom stages was observed to be comparable to that in Experiment 2a.
