HIV/AIDS coping by disengagement or avoidance was associated with greater health-related stress.[21] In addition, poor social functioning may be associated with greater use of avoidance coping strategies such as withdrawal and conflictual social interactions. Social isolation and conflictual social interactions have been shown to increase stress, resulting in poorer overall social functioning.[22] People living with HIV/AIDS who increase their use of avoidance coping strategies such as behavioral disengagement and self-distraction as well as their use of alcohol and drugs may have poorer physical and social functioning.
