14.1 General The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 imposes duties on employers and the self-employed to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of all their employees and that undertakings are conducted in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons not in their employment who may be affected are not thereby exposed to risks to their health and safety. This duty includes not only the provision and maintenance of plant that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health but also the provision and maintenance of such systems of work, information, instruction, training and supervision as are necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of employees. Employees have a duty to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of other persons who may be affected by their conduct at work. They also have the duty to co-operate with their employers so far as is necessary to enable the employers to meet their legal obligations.
