We found that it is important to achieve a realistic means of integrating TTM into the mainstream medical system in a com- plementary way. ATTMPs, the knowledge of TTM, herbal materials and the culture of the use of herbal medicines are still beneficial to the healthcare system. Moreover, the integration of TTM into the mainstream medical system is urgently necessary to sustain TTM knowledge, develop TTM practices, and increase the use of herbal medicines before the knowledge of TTM and of medicinal plants is lost. However, the effectiveness of the medicinal plants used should be further investigated and their potential toxicity should be monitored.
The key success factors of the integration effort can be summa- rized as follows: First, the knowledge of herbal medicine use that derives from Royal TTM and FM from local folk healers was suc- cessfully communicated to the hospital practitioners. Second, an integrated healthcare team was arranged with both modern and traditional members, including physicians, ATTMPs, pharmacists, and nurses who could learn the knowledge of herbal medicine use and apply this knowledge for the benefit of their patients. Third, the plant materials that were needed for the preparations were avail- able from different sources, including cultivation, the community, the wild, and commercial suppliers. Fourth, the herbal medicines gained acceptance from the community and the patients. All four of these success factors led to the integration of herbal medicines into this modern hospital. Hence, these factors will be beneficial for promoting sustainable healthcare systems in Thailand and in other countries in which modern medicine is the mainstream medical system.
The success of the utilization of herbal medicine at Kabchoeng Hospital was due to the cooperation of all of the hospital staff mem- bers, who had a united goal in mind – to provide the best healthcare services. The hospital staff members with backgrounds in modern medicine had to shift their paradigms to accept medical plural- ism, and the ATTMPs had to improve their abilities to maintain the high standards of TTM practices and communicate with all of the hospital staff members and patients.
