Simply known as Charice, this 18-year-old Filipino recording artist and actress rose to popularity through YouTube. Dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as the “most talented girl in the world,” she released her first international studio album, Charice, in 2010. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number-eight making Charice the first Asian and Filipino singer in history to place in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 album chart. Raised by a single mother, Charice got her first break in 2005 when she joined Little Big Star, a Philippines talent show loosely based on American Idol, but wasn’t until 2007 that she gained worldwide recognition after an avid fan started posting a series of her performance videos on YouTube. These received over 13 million hits and a phenomenon was born. The New York Post has called her a vocal prodigy for being able to sing ‘big songs’ even at her tender age and Ryan Murphy, executive music producer of the hit US television series Glee, is quoted as saying “When that girl opens her mouth, angels fly out.” This young lady with the big voice is going to make some noise in the future, you’ll see.
