Water The provision of clean water, sanitation and waste management is closely related to the status of human
health. However, the current water supply is poor, with only 57 per cent of households using water from sources
considered safe. Available data also indicates that about 75 per cent of the country’s urban population and 50
per cent of the rural population currently have access to safe drinking water. To address this problem, a number
of programmes and projects will be implemented, including the rehabilitation and protection of forests in fiveA GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE AND PROSPEROUS KENYA x
water towers; water storage and harvesting programme through the construction of two large multi-purpose
dams with capacity to store 2.4 billion cubic meters as well as the development of sanitation and urban sewerage
programmes.
