Understanding the user’s requirements help the designer organize the placing of elements on a sign and determines the level of emphasis. By taking on the role of a member of the audience, the designer will probably arrive at the following hierarchy: box office, auditorium, seat numbers, clock, care and cloakroom. Obviously the box office is a key source of information and will be in large type along with directions to the auditorium. The clock needs to be nearby and easily readable from the sign point. Seat numbers are another level of detail and can be smaller. Facilities such as the café and cloakrooms can be indicated using pictograms. Thus, an information hierarchy emerges directly from identifying the needs of the user.
