Sala tree is native to the Indian subcontinent and the east to Nepal.
In the Buddha's time, Maya Devi, his mother, gave birth to the child
in Lumbini under a sal tree while she was standing, the baby,
the future Buddha, was born. Before the Buddha's death, he came to
the river and took a bath. Then he made a rope bed among eight sal trees,
with each direction having two. He lay down on his side, right hand
supporting his head, the other resting on his body. All later reclining
Buddhas (called Buddha's Nirvana) are in the same posture.
