Respiratory muscle strength and spirometry Immediately after the run, there was a significant
decrease in maximal inspiratory pressure and peak inspiratory flow (P 50.01), whilst expiratory measures (maximal expiratory pressure and peak expiratory flow) remain unchanged from baseline (Table I). No significant changes were observed in forced expiratory volume in one second or forced vital capacity, although the decrease in forced vital capacity of 270 ml (P ¼0.06) immediately after the marathon is noteworthy. With the exception of peak inspiratory flow, all measures had returned to baseline 4–24 h after the marathon.
