This study has shown that while the UK older adults sampled were currently making very
little use of playground equipment, there was notable interest in the concept of
playground use particularly as a means of partaking in activity with grandchildren.
Considerable social barriers to playground use have been highlighted by the study that
must be countered before the majority of older users would be willing to try using
playgrounds in either a supervised or informal setting. These barriers are likely to
prevent use even where inclusive equipment is provided.
