Sixty Phuket hotels get lessons in being greener

PHUKET: Vice-Governor Suthee Thongyam chaired the opening today (May 11) of a two-day training course for representatives of 60 hotels around the island aimed at making them behave in a more “green” way.

With the advent of the Asean Economic Community at the end of this year, hotels will be required to meet international environmental standards such as those set by the Asean Green Hotel Awards, Earth Check and Green Glove.

Held at the Pearl Hotel in Phuket Town, the Green Hotel project seminar aims to get hotels to care more for the environment and to save energy by establishing correct environmental and energy management programs.

V/Gov Suthee explained, “Tourism in Phuket is growing rapidly, and that has an effect on the environment and natural resources through such problems as untreated wastewater, unseparated garbage, and excessive use of water or electricity.

“This project expects hotels around the island to improve their environmental standards, not only for the good of the community but also to their own advantage.

“We have hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of wastewater pumped into drains in Phuket every day but we have only four government water treatment plants, which can treat only around 20,000 cubic meters per day.

“Business operators can help this issue by treating their own waste water before releasing it into public drains.

“Many places have water treatment plants on site but do not use them, which causes problems for the surrounding community. Recently we had an idea: to split metering of power so that the main power supply and the power supply to the water treatment machine in any hotel are metered separately. That way, we can check who is really following the rule [about water treatment],” the Vice-Governor said.

“Hotel operators can also help with garbage separation. The Housekeeping staff can handle this job. The island generates 700 tons of garbage a day but we have limited-capacity incinerators. We need help from everyone.”

He said he believed the two days of training, by experts from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, will give the 60 hotel representatives a greater understanding of environmental preservation and energy saving.

Hotels will be inspected later and those that pass the Green Hotel evaluation criteria will receive a “G Trophy”, valid for two years as a guarantee that the hotel is environmental friendly.

Those that pass will also be recommended to government departments as places to hold seminars and conferences.
