As evidenced by the focus of The Guidelines on Multicultural Education, Training, Research, Practice, and Organizational Change for Psychologists, age is not explicitly identified as a component of diversity in most discussions of cultural competency. However, as noted in The Institute of Medicine (IOM)’s Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare (2002), in virtually every area of physical and mental heath, most racially and ethnically diverse elders have as many or more problems than the majority population. This is especially noteworthy for diverse older adults attempting to access health care.
