The first step of research process is to define the problem that is to be answered by the research. This provides “the basis for the thinking about the context of the research that will be needed and the general nature of the information required…to make the decisions.”This is most important part of the process because it provides the focus and direction for the rest of the project. A problem that is unclear or that is poorly defined can result in a significant loss of time and resources wasted on gathering potentially useless information and data. There is a saying in research that “a problem will defined is a problem half solved.”
8.It is important to note that there can be different types of business problems, from managerial problems to research problems. For example, a problem for management could be: “Should the current advertising be changed?” The most specific research problem, however ,would be,” How effective is the currant advertising campaign, you find it to be effective, the campaign should not be changed. On the other hand, if the campaign is not effective ,then the campaign most certainly should be changed. Therefor, when defining the research problem, it is important that the final statement allows the researcher to obtain the information needed to address the management problem and be a guide in formulating the research design.
