The word ‘hospitality’ is derived from the French word ‘Hospice’ meaning to provide care/shelter for travellers.
The first forms of public accommodation were basically private homes opened to the public.
Under the influence of the Roman Empire, inns began catering to the traveller in an effort to encourage visitors.
Between 4,000 and 2000 BC early hospitality offers were taverns and inns along roadsides.
