While there is widespread agreement within the chemicalengineering community that all chemical engineering gradua-tes should possess an appreciation of the importance of andknowledge around personal and process safety there is lit-tle agreement as to the best method to achieve this. Somebelieve that safety should be covered in a self-contained sub-ject taught in the later years of the programme by whichtime students will have developed a better understanding ofchemical engineering processes and their associated hazards(Cortés et al., 2012; Ferjencik, 2007; Saleh and Pendley, 2012)while others believe that safety should be taught through-out the course integrated in almost every subject (Shallcross,2013a, 2013b). Accreditation bodies such as ABET (2011) in theUS, Engineers Australia (2008) and the Institution of ChemicalEngineers (2012) all note the importance of including safety inany programme that they accredit but remain silent as to thebest way to achieve this.
