Neuschwanstein Castle is an enormous, fairy tale castle in Bavaria. In fact, literally a fairy tale castle. It's entirely a 19th century fake, built on the orders of a mad prince with an unhealthy obsession with Wagner opera and medieval myths. It was even built to be more "authentic" than the medieval castle it replaced that's further down the hill, and according to one information sign, the original even older castle on the same site. It was built to be grander, more dramatic and lovelier than a medieval castle, and it succeeds in many ways, although it wouldn't stand up to a sustained siege for more than a day or two (castle nerd).
