The Grand Orchestra: A Humanistic Conceptualization of
Group Music Therapy in Dementia Care

Abstract
As part of a project in which a model of musical self-actualization was
developed [Jessop, 2003), the researcher used poetry, metaphor, and imagery
to represent participants in a dementia care music therapy group, highlighting
their humanity, their musicality, and ultimately their experiences of musical
self-actualization. The current article evokes this different understanding
of group music therapy in dementia care. This perspective is offered as an
invitation for music therapy practitioners and researchers to re-engage and
re-consider the experience of working with persons affected by dementia.
