Net C mass loss occurred in wood blocks of all species except for the blocks that were buried in the termite-present microcosms. The best-fit model for C mass remaining retained termites, wood species and position . The only significant interaction was between termite and position, highlighting that termite effects were dependent on position, likely because of the gain in mass of C in the buried blocks when termites were present. Net gain in mass of N was observed for all
species except for buried birch without termites.
