Less important flows were not accounted for in the assessment.
Infrastructure and machinery were not included in this study,
because research on several salmonid culture systems, which varied
greatly in terms of infrastructure required, revealed that
infrastructure was insignificant to the total impact (Ayer and
Tyedmers, 2009). Transport of additives to the farms, hatcheries
and feed mill were not accounted for because their small amounts
were assumed to be negligible (they contribute to 0.3% of total
CEENE value; see 3.2., “Total resource use”). The use of packing
material in the company’s feed mill was not accounted for because
of its negligible quantity.
Additional data on composition, temperature and pressure of
the input and output flows was obtained to calculate their exergy
content as required for an Exergetic Life Cycle Assessment (ELCA).
Szargut et al. (1988) and Dewulf et al. (2008) provide the information
necessary for calculating exergy contents.
