Agricultural trade (or food export) was necessary because agriculture
was the only source for foreign exchange earnings. Food imports
increased in 1962 following severe crop failure and widespread famine,
but were quickly scaled back as economic recovery gathered pace and
agriculture, again, became a major contributor of foreign exchange.
