The theory of resources for learning mathematics plays a central part, for learning is understood to involve activity. Thus the classroom must be a rich environment, structural apparatus and other equipment are provided to facilitate concept formation and external representations of mathematical ideas. Resources for creating, expressing and making are needed, as is the environment beyond the confines of the classroom, to link mathematics with the whole of the child’ s experience. Furthermore, the child’s access to resources needs to be self determining.
