The chief officer estimated from the aspect of Timor Stream’s navigation lights, that the vessel was on a heading of around 090º. The vessel’s actual heading was 041º, a discrepancy of almost 50º (Figure 26). A few seconds before the collision, the chief officer believed that Timor Stream turned to port, although the vessel’s heading did not change at all. It is considered likely that the ‘turn’ reported by the chief officer was actually him correcting his false perception of Timor Stream’s aspect.
