Primary and Secondary Education
The Cincinnati MSA has 71 school districts and 56 private schools from which to choose. The Cincinnati Public School (CPS) district is Ohio's 3rd largest and Hamilton County's largest. CPS' 62 district schools service approximately 35,000 students in grades pre-K through the 12th grade. There are 16 high schools with specific focuses; 19 magnet elementary schools with programs in the arts, foreign language, and Montessori and Paideia teaching styles. Also, there is a great selection of neighborhood elementary schools. In 2007-2008 and for the 4th year in a row, the Ohio Report Card awarded CPS the Continuous Improvement rating.
Under the $1-billion Facilities Master Plan (FMP), CPS will replace antiquated learning facilities with state-of-the-art buildings. These new buildings all feature the use of natural lighting, classrooms which are technically ready for the 21st century, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, and common areas for “gathering spot” use by students and surrounding communities. Neighborhood reinvestment of over $300 million has also been dedicated to redevelopment and beautification efforts of these neighborhoods. CPS is midway to the goal having every CPS student in a new or newly renovated school building by 2013.
