Singapore was one of the founding members of ASEAN when it was formed on 8 August 1967, along with Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. As a small nation-state, Singapore strongly supports ASEAN’s goal of building a strong, cohesive and prosperous ASEAN in order to promote development and prosperity for our peoples.
As part of our regional integration efforts, ASEAN has developed and is working towards the establishment of an ASEAN Community by
31 December 2015. ASEAN is on track to meet this goal; as of end-2013, an average of 82.5% of all action lines under the three ASEAN Community Blueprints have been completed or are being implemented. To support these Community-building efforts, ASEAN has also instituted the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) and the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC). The IAI seeks to narrow the development gap between the older and newer members of ASEAN, while the MPAC aims to improve physical, institutional and people-to-people connectivity within the region.
