History
In old times, this was Trondheim's place of execution. Just after the year 1000, a Benedictine monastery was built on the island. Probably one of the first two in the Nordic countries.
In 1658, the island was rebuilt into a fortress and a prison, and later also a customs station. The most famous prisoner was the Danish count Peder Griffenfeld who was imprisoned here for more than 18 years. Nowadays, Munkholmen is a popular excursion spot, bathing place and restaurant.
