From Sofia Coppola's rock-infused period drama Marie Antoinette comes the very first sensual womenswear collection “Let Them Eat Cake” from Bangkok's newest fashion house, Milin.
Reinterpreting the 2006 film about the doomed French queen, Marie Antoinette. Milin Yuvacharuskul and team transform the elements embodied by Kirsten Dunst, who plays Marie Antoinette, into cool mini-dresses, one-shoulder dresses, form-fitting trouser suits and frilled tops that you see all through the collection. We're fascinated by the colors and personalities of Kirsten Dunst in this film. She's beautiful, cool, innocent and yet sexy at the same time and borrow her complex personality and conceive the forms of the clothes by putting together these shades of personality.
One key motif from the film that Milin brings onto collection is the pastel palette. The idea is to use pastel colours like pink, lavender, grey, peach, champagne and cream in contrast to navy blue and black to tone down the sweet feel. Milin also explores in this collection one seemingly insignificant prop in the movie – the fan carried by Marie Antoinette, which is seen in almost every scene and we use that in the collection and settled on designing prints from the fan using digital scanning technique and editing the image to achieve a complete print.” The feathered fan aside, this collection also boasts chiffon dresses in prints inspired by colourful diamonds worn by Marie Antoinette.
The ubiquitous feathered fan doesn't lend its presence only to the print, but the lines and dimension of the fan are also incorporated onto the clothes. Sequins inject the collection with luxury while the curves and shadows of period costumes become another interesting detail in the entire collection. “I love to make clothes that feel light, yet concealing small details. I don't want them to be so overtly feminine or masculine. Prints will be used in all collections as one unique feature of the brand I believe our customers will like. We also have matching leather accessories as well.
New as the brand may be in the Thai fashion business, Milin sets to play a vital role as a new alternative for hip uptown girls. “Lindsay Lohan should be a perfect representation of this collection,” Milin insisted. “We think of bold and dressy party girls who look rebellious and yet can be so sweet and innocent like no other girls.”
