RAMESH SRINIVASAN: Coaching is a tool that allows a leader to ensure full alignment in the team. So when there's misalignment between team members, coaching allows a leader to surface that and help the team member get aligned with the team's goals.
Also when things change in the environment and the team or individuals need to change what they're doing, coaching allows the leader to accomplish that. So it's the best tool for optimizing alignment, execution, and renewal that a leader has to create a high performing team.
We've just talked about feedback in the last lesson. The difference between feedback and coaching is one where feedback is typically a one-time activity. You see something specific and you want to address that. Coaching tends to be a longer-term process to really uncover specific, but deeper needs in the individual and help them find the answers within themselves to address those needs.
Let me give you an example. I'm working with a project manager. And I've been spending time coaching her over the last year or so. And I'm finding that the coaching has helped her improve her own interaction with clients and have much better businesses results.
Our relationship has improved significantly as a result of the time we're spending and frankly, has given me more meaning and has made work more fun for me. I understand her as a as a project manager much better, and it allows me to have more impact through her at my clients.
Coaching is important because it helps eliminate any barriers to an effective team. It leads to better business results. And it allows the creation of a team that is having more fun and growing as individual leaders.
