Phonology is the study of the patterns of sounds in a language-how those different sounds are related and combined with one another.
The number of sounds differs from language to language; sounds that occur in some languages may not be found in other languages. Moreover, languages are also distinct in the way they organize their sounds into patterns. Although several languages may share a number of sounds, these sounds do not function and distribute in two or more languages exactly the same. In other words, speech sounds form different patterns in different languages (Fromkin et al. 2007).
