The driving wheels are bolted to the outer ends of the axle
shafts. The outer axle bearings are located between the
axle shaft and axle housing. This type of axle has a
bearing pressed into the end of the axle housing. This bearinging supports the axle shaft. The axle shaft is held in place
with either a bearing retainer belted to a flange on fits
of the axle housing or by a C-shaped washer that
grooves machined in the splined end of the shaft
