1. Introduction
Alcohol consumption in Australia, Germany and Wales is the
focus of this study, particularly the frequent and excessive
misuse of alcohol by their young people (see Preventative
Health Taskforce, 2008; Bohm, 2007; Moore et al., 2010).
This study investigates the relationship between university
students’ perceived susceptibility to retail sales promotional
strategies, their intention to buy alcohol and their attitudes
toward alcohol consumption. For some time social marketers
have been active in research endeavours aimed at
understanding alcohol consumption among young people
(e.g. Kubacki et al., 2011). Nonetheless, there remains a
dearth of literature beyond the context of universities and
colleges in the USA. This study addresses this as well as other
gaps in the literature to provide fresh insights.
