The mission left Hamburg on 3 May, crossing the Elbe river on the newly built iron bridge, passed
Hannover and stayed at Frankfurt on the Main at the Hotel d’Angleterre for two nights. There the printing
shop of C.Naumann was visited, where the mission observed the printing process of the first modern bank
notes of Japan, the ‘German money’. This had been issued in April 1872 and was printed for a few years.
They also saw the delightful Palmengarten of Frankfurt, which still exists today
