The School-Associated Violent Death Surveillance Study
(SAVD), conducted by CDC in collaboration with the U.S.
Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice,
describes the epidemiology of school-associated violent deaths,
identifies common features of these deaths, estimates the rate
of school-associated violent death in the United States, and
identifies potential risk factors for these deaths (62) (available
at http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/youthviolence/
schoolviolence/SAVD.html). SAVD includes descriptive
data on all identified school-associated violent deaths in
the United States, including all homicides, suicides, or legal
intervention incidents in which the fatal injury occurred on
the campus of a functioning elementary or secondary school,
while the victim was on the way to or from regular sessions
