There have been several attempts to automate the lambda switching process. The simplest comes with the 1x2 protection switch. By designing a signal detection circuit into the switch we can failover automatically if the primary cable is broken. In more sophisticated designs, a monitoring unit is associated with one or more protection switches to detect BER (bit error rate) degradation and switch to the secondary path.
