The second article in this special section considers the relationship between the perceived quality of the coaching context and youth individual characteristics. Coatsworth and Conroy (2009), similar to Gaudreau et al. (2009), examined within-sport variability in experiences, specifically, with youth swimmers in a community-based summer league. These authors utilized a single structural equation model to test a sequential process model linking coach behaviors to youth-perceived competence and selfesteem to youth developmental outcomes of initiative and identity reflection and autonomy. The findings suggested that coaches’ autonomy support through process-focused praise had an effect on initiative and identity reflection through developing youth selfperceptions.
