Toward An Applied Learning Framework for Teaching in the 21st Century is a study about applied learning as an approach to teacher development in response to the needs of teachers who are preparing for the delivery of a new curriculum initiative, Applied Academics . The basic concept of applied academics is that learning bridges theory and practice and the content is applied in contexts outside the traditional classroom. In British Columbia, applied academics refers to four new curricula offered in the high school system: Applications of Mathematics, Applications of Physics, Technical and Professional Communications and Information Technology. These four curriculum areas correspond to the key content areas required by industry today. This study focuses on the Applied Academics initiative as a part of the larger problem of providing teachers with relevant teacher development services as they prepare themselves and their students for a rapidly changing world.
