Again this result is not aligned with conventional wisdom, which suggests,
that build-to-order should actually decrease the levels of inven-
tory and forecast-oriented systems should need more inventory.
This result calls for a deeper understanding on the relationship
with the distribution process and performance, and might lead to
a reconsideration of the traditional performance measurement of
“leanness” using the inventory-turns indicator. Our discussion
suggests the necessity for us to shift the attention from simply
logical theoretical frameworks to actual practices and their con-
nections to environmental conditions and mass customization.
