In the third example, “like” indicates that an example is given. So does the presence of the two dashes. The adjectival phrase “made recently by Dr.Mahathir” and the noun clause “that part of the foreign press is a ‘zionist tool’” add more information to the word “claims”, making it clearer what “claims” are about. The adjectival clause “which enjoy nothing more than to undermine the world’s trust in Malaysia” also gives added information to “zionist tool”. Apart from these noun modifiers, the comparative pattern “as…as” tells you what the writer thinks of the “claims”. When all these modifiers are deleted, you will arrive at the main idea “Claims are outrageous.”
Example 3
Claims like those made recently by Dr.Mahathir that part of the foreign press—The Asia Wall Street Journal in particular—is a “zionist tool” which enjoy nothing more than to undermine the world’s trust in Malaysia are as outrageous as they are nonsensical.
