6.1.1 Modes of transport
Freight transport is carried out by the following modes of transport: train, road vehicle (e.g. truck), aircraft, ship (for transport on oceans, seas, lakes, canals and rivers) and pipeline. Some modes of transport (e.g. air) do not allow a door-to-door connection between any origin and destination and, therefore, should be used jointly with other modes (intermodal transport). In intermodal transport, the commodities can be stored temporarily and then consolidated into different bins (railway wagons, containers and pallets).
