The characteristics of wastewater, TKN, TDS, and COD, before
and after the experiment and the standard guideline for each
parameter, are shown in Table 2. The two plants had the potential to
remove the total phosphorus to lower than standard effluents.
Moreover, COD, TDS, and TKN were also reduced. Table 3 compared
the potential of the phytoremediation system and conventional
method (chemical þ activated sludge process) for remediation of
domestic wastewater. Under the chemical þ activated sludge process,
ferric chloride (FeCl3) was used for phosphorus precipitation.
Phosphorus removal was not different between the two methods.
However, an advantage of the phytoremediation process was that it
had higher TDS removal efficiency than the chemical þ activated
sludge system, although it took more time for remediation.
