A 25% incidence of preeclampsia has been observed in patients with PHP.
A study published by Hultin and colleagues reviewed the impact of PHP on preeclampsia. The study demonstrated a signifi cant association between parathyroid adenoma and subsequent preeclampsia.
They theorized that the similarities in endothelial damage, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease shared between the two disease processes may support the hypothesis that a relationship exists between PHP and preeclampsia.
In addition, it has been shown that maternal vitamin D deficiency has been associated with preeclampsia.
This also supports the concept that the mechanisms that support calcium homeostasis affect blood pressure in the pregnant patient.
