In fed batch fermentations, 5 g/l of fructose was intermittently
supplied four times at each decline of CO2
concentration in the exhaust gas. Initial fermentation conditions
were the same as shown in Fig. 7. Supplying additional
carbon substrate resulted in continuous cellulose
production and relatively small increase in cell concentration
(Fig. 8); 6.8 g/l cellulose from 40 g/l of carbon substrate
(5 g glucose and 35g fructose) was obtained. This
suggests that cellulose productivity can be improved
using fed batch fermentation and that extensive studies on
the process are required.
