None of the above could happen without the
staff having appropriate education and support.
Using the patient’s timeline study and adapting
best available evidence, a training package was
developed, which team members attended in small
groups. Soon compassion and understanding
were adopted, resulting in increased empathy for
patients with such difficulties. Staff attitudes were
explored and it was explained that patients with
BPD face stigma and harsh attitudes from clinicians
(Black et al 2011). James and Cowman (2007) agree
that nurses are more likely to respond in a belittling
or contradicting manner, and appear less empathetic
towards individuals with BPD than to others with
different conditions.
