One of the points that clearly demonstrates O'Reilly's future management style was his objection to the strict hierarchy of the oil industry in general. Status did not interest him, and he was more apt to laugh than frown. Over the next few years, he moved with the company to various divisions in New Jersey, Utah and Texas. At one point, one of the factories in which he was a manager was threatening to strike. Instead of sitting back and watching on the sidelines, as most management did in those days, he went right down to the employees, and asked what was wrong. He was also unlike other management of the time, in that he did not flaunt fancy possessions. At one post, the first thing he did was send everyone in management a note saying that they could no longer wear ties. He did not believe that they should look different than the employees on the factory floors.
