Some Tips for Conducting Effective Safety interactions
• Do not take notes during the observation contact.
• Emphasis should be placed on people activity, not "things."
• Employees should be "put-at-ease" early in the process. This takes time and should not be rushed.
■ The Observation team should ask questions, not deliver lectures. The objective is to get employees to personally recognize the need to upgrade their safety performance. Discussions should be skillfully guided, but not be manipulative.
• These Safety Observations become a powerful activity in support of the total safety effort.
They require management presence in the workplace actively interacting with employees on a subject that is employee oriented (their safety). These Observations are an effective means for improving morale in the workplace.
