This material is synthesized at very high temperature
(above 1400¡C) from the crystalline ceramic oxides ZrO2
and TiO2. However, the temperature at which the material
is formed may be considerably lowered by using a solÐgel
(5Ð7) or synthetic precursor approach (8). The size and
shape of the microparticles of zirconium titanate can be
controlled in solÐgel syntheses as has been reported for
microÞbers (9) and microspheres (10). Nonhydrolytic solÐ
gel processes for preparing zirconium titanate have also
been published (11, 12).
