Each algorithm yields a score of 0, 1, or 2 for dental caries or injuries. The algorithm scores are summed yielding one total score that represents the oral health status of the child. The algorithm for coding dental caries is as follows: code 0 for no decay, 1 for a restored tooth, and 2 for dental caries or chipped teeth. Dentists, dental hygienists, and nurses have been tested in the use of the VSEOHSC and have high inter-rater reliabilities (85%-100%) and κ scores (.70 to 1.00; Beltran et al.). The validity of the VSEOHSC by nurses and dental hygienists with a population of 632 children was high for screening for caries and urgent treatment needs, sensitivity was 93.6% to 94.3%, and specificity was 96.6% to 99.6% (Beltran et al.). Beltran and colleagues also evaluated the validity of visual screening versus visual-tactile examination between the dental hygienist and the dentist, as well as between the nurse and the dentist. No significant difference was found in all comparisons.
